Bracing Options for Hip Dysplasia
Denis Browne Hip Abduction Brace (DBB)
Our experienced Orthotists fit many DBB’s every year. We have six different sizes to cater for newborns to babies up to nine months old. One brace is usually sufficient to complete the treatment. The Orthokids DBB is 'Made in Melbourne' at our Surrey Hills facility.
The brace is designed to maintain the legs in a ‘frog leg’ position. This ensures that the ‘ball’ part of the hip joint is held deeply into the ‘cup’ part, encouraging growth in the correct areas. It is quite a dynamic brace, allowing some wriggle-room while keeping the hips in the ‘safe’ position. It is a tried and tested design and is the most commonly fitted hip brace at Orthokids.

Developmental Milestones - DBB
It is difficult to roll in a DBB. If your baby was rolling prior to wearing the brace, they have ~ 50% chance of rolling the brace. If your baby was not rolling prior to wearing the brace, around 20% are able to roll in the brace. Of course, every baby is an individual and we encourage you to assist your baby with their physical development whilst wearing the DBB.
Rhino Hip Abduction Brace
Our experienced Orthotists have fitted hundreds of Rhino braces. We only use the original Rhino Cruiser.
The Rhino hip abduction brace has been prescribed for your baby or toddler to keep the hip joints in a position of abduction and flexion (frog leg position). This position encourages the ball of the joint to sit into the socket, allowing development of the shallow part of the socket.
The Rhino abduction brace is designed to be used in infants from 3-24 months and allows some movement. Infants are able to learn to roll, sit, commando crawl and toddlers can actually walk in the brace. Crawling on hands and knees is not possible with the brace.
The Rhino brace is also prescribed for babies who have a late presentation of dysplasia or following plaster spica /surgical treatment.

Developmental Milestones - Rhino
It is difficult to walk in a Rhino Brace. Most toddlers who were walking prior to wearing the Rhino are likely to walk. It tends to be more of a waddle than a walk but it does get them from A to B.
Pavlik Harness
Our experienced Orthotists fit many Pavlik Harnesses every year. Our Pavlik Harness is made from low allergenic natural materials.
The harness is designed to maintain the legs in a ‘frog leg’ position. This ensures that the ‘ball’ part of the hip joint is held deeply into the ‘cup’ part, encouraging growth in the correct areas. The Pavlik Harness has been used to effectively treat hip dysplasia in children for many years. It is a soft and forgiving device but must be fitted correctly to work properly. The Harness needs adjustment for growth every 2-4 weeks and must be done by your orthotist or doctor.
