The Serkel helmet is used to treat babies between 4 and 12 months of age for asymmetrical head shapes, such as positional plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, when other treatment options have not been successful.

Following clinical assessment and a 3D scan of your baby’s head shape, your Orthotist will outline your treatment options.
We aim to provide you with comprehensive information about your baby's head shape and allow you to make an informed decision about treatment choices.
You may choose to proceed with helmet therapy or return for a review at 4 or 6 weeks. Our orthotists are happy to offer advice on how to prevent a flat head in your baby. Each Serkel helmet is custom made from a 3D scan of your baby's head.
3D Scanner Assessment
We use a 3D scanner for the assessment of baby head shapes. This technology is the most accurate method available for head shape assessment.
The scanner utilises a structured light to capture the 3D image of your baby's head shape in real time. There are no safety concerns when using this type of light on infants or children.
Custom made for your baby
If you make the decision to proceed with a Serkel helmet for your baby, our team of clinicians and software engineers will begin the process of designing and manufacturing your baby's Serkel.
Industry-specific software is used to create a unique 3D printable file and sent to our industrial 3D printers.
It takes approximately a week until your baby's Serkel will be ready for fitting. Following fitting, we review the babies frequently to re-scan and adjust the fit as the head grows.
How it works
The Serkel works by artificially relieving pressure over the flat spot.
Once pressure from the weight of the head always being in the same spot is relieved, the bone immediately starts to grow and the head rounds out (dependant on age and severity).
We do not squeeze the skull back into shape, but redirect the growth to fill out the flattened area.
