Foot orthoses support the arches in your child’s feet to improve foot alignment. They may help with comfort, balance and endurance during walking and play.

Foot orthoses can support the arches of the feet to improve stability. They can help when ankles roll inward and are a great option for managing symptoms associated with flat feet or other foot posture issues.
Foot orthoses help the foot move more efficiently by supporting the arch and improving alignment during each step. This can help children walk more smoothly and reduce the extra energy used when feet roll in. Many children find they can walk or play for longer without discomfort or fatigue. Orthoses don’t change the permanent shape of the foot but can help it work better during movement.
When a child’s feet collapse inward, the ankle, knee and hip also have to work harder to stay stable. Foot orthoses help steady the foot, giving your child a more secure foundation for standing and walking. This added stability can help with balance, coordination and confidence—especially for children with low muscle tone or hypermobility.
Flat feet or misaligned foot posture can sometimes cause pain in the feet, legs or lower back. Orthoses help distribute pressure more evenly and reduce strain on tired or overstretched muscles. Children who previously avoided walking or complained of sore legs may feel more comfortable and willing to stay active once they’re supported.
Without support, prolonged over-pronation or flat feet can lead to muscle fatigue, ligament strain or long-term changes in posture. Foot orthoses guide the foot into a healthier position during growth, helping protect developing joints and tissues. They are often used early to prevent problems later, particularly in children with low muscle tone or hypermobility.
Our orthoses are custom-made by our expert technical team in our Surrey Hills manufacturing lab.
Using specialised design software, we create a fully customised orthotic based on your child’s foot shape and clinical findings.

We fit a wide range of orthoses for babies, children and teenagers.
This includes prefabricated (off-the-shelf) braces designed specifically for paediatric use, as well as custom-made orthoses that are individually designed and manufactured for your child.
The type of orthosis recommended depends on the diagnosis, age, activity level, and clinical goals. In some cases, a ready-made brace is appropriate. In others, a custom device is needed to achieve the right fit and support.
Our team will assess carefully and explain which option is most suitable and why.
Referrals aren’t necessary for a number of appointments. If you’d like your child assessed for head shape, toe walking or mobility, you can simply book an appointment online or by phone on 03 9836 4480.
Some conditions do need a referral however. For conditions such as hip dysplasia, scoliosis or pectus, or for management of fractures or acute injury, you’ll need a referral from your GP or other medical specialist.
If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us and we can help out.
