Ruby’s Story

Ruby’s mum shares their family’s experience with AFOs

Ruby is 6 years old and has been coming to Orthokids for the past four years. After being diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, Ruby was prescribed Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) to support her mobility and development. Her family were referred to Orthokids as a specialist orthotics clinic for children. In this short interview, Ruby’s mum, Steph, shares their experience and how the right support has helped Ruby grow in confidence and independence.

How long have you and your child been coming to Orthokids?

We have been coming to Orthokids for 4 years. Ruby received her first set of AFOs when she was 2 years old.

What brought you to Orthokids in the first place?

After Ruby was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, she was prescribed AFOs by her physiotherapist at the time, and Orthokids was recommended to us as a specialist orthotics clinic for children. We wanted the best support possible for her mobility and development.

What has been most helpful about our team’s approach?

The team’s child-centred and family-centred approach has been incredibly helpful. They always take the time to explain things clearly, involve Ruby in the process, and make what could be overwhelming feel manageable and positive.

Did you feel supported and informed throughout the process by Orthokids? In what way?

Yes, absolutely. They’ve always explained why Ruby needed certain supports, how the AFOs would help, and what changes to expect. They’ve also been open to questions and adjustments, which has made us feel confident and supported.

What day to day changes have you noticed since your child started wearing their AFOs?

We have noticed improvements in Ruby’s stability, balance, and confidence when walking. She is able to move more safely and with less effort, which has made daily activities and play much easier for her.

Was there a moment when you noticed things getting easier? Was there a moment when you thought, “This is really helping”?

Yes – when Ruby started walking more steadily and falling less often, it was a big “this is really helping” moment. Also the day she took her first independent steps! Seeing her confidence grow has been incredibly reassuring.

What did you appreciate about the fitting or review appointments?

I appreciated how thorough and gentle the team was, especially with Ruby. They always checked her comfort, growth, and movement, and made sure the AFOs were working for her – not just clinically, but practically in everyday life.

If your child described Orthokids, what do you think they would say?

She’d probably say it’s a friendly place where people help her walk better and make her feel comfortable and special.

What would you say to another parent who is unsure about booking an appointment?

I’d say don’t hesitate—having the right support early makes a huge difference, and the team genuinely cares about your child and your family.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience with Orthokids?

Orthokids has been a supportive, knowledgeable, and compassionate partner in Ruby’s mobility journey.
