AFOs: A beginners guide

Helping families understand AFOs and how they can support comfort, stability, and everyday movement.

Overview

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a custom-made brace worn on the lower leg and foot. It helps support foot and ankle position and may assist with stability, comfort, and walking.

AFOs are prescribed for different reasons, including:

  • Supporting stability

  • Guiding walking patterns

  • Helping prevent deformity

  • Protecting healing after surgery

Each AFO is made to suit your child’s shape, age, and goals.

Getting started with AFOs

Reviews and growth

As your child grows, AFOs will need:

  • Regular reviews

  • Small adjustments

  • Replacement over time (often 9–18 months)

If your child becomes uncomfortable, remove the AFOs and contact us.

Reviews and adjustments for your child’s AFOs are included at no extra cost.

When to contact Orthokids

Please contact us if:

  • Skin looks sore or broken

  • The heel won’t stay down

  • The AFO seems too small or damaged

  • Walking or comfort changes suddenly

  • You’re unsure about wear time or fit

We’re always happy to check—early contact can prevent small issues becoming bigger ones.
