Fractures, Sprains and Strains
Fracture bracing can allow kids to have plaster casts off early or to avoid them altogether.
Using bracing after casts also protects a vulnerable fracture while it completely heals. This means kids can get back to a normal life sooner! For active kids who love their sport, a brace can get them back into training earlier.
Using a brace instead of a plaster cast can be an excellent treatment for fractures sustained in the rough and tumble of children’s lives.
At Orthokids, we fit a variety of braces for many different types of fractures of the upper limb, lower limb and spine .
If your doctor decides it is appropriate to use a fracture brace instead of a cast, an appointment can usually be made for that same day. Most braces are able to be fitted on the same day as your appointment. Some more complex braces require custom-making, which takes a little more time.
Either way, we will have you out of your cast and into a new brace that allows you more freedom and choice with your activities.
Sprains and Strains of ligaments and muscles respectively will sometimes need some longer term rehabilitation. We have braces for wrists, thumbs, fingers, ankles, knees, elbows and shoulders to provide support or to position the joint for healing. We are able to make orthoses, modify footwear or use carbon fibre inserts for ligament injuries to the feet and toes. Many devices are pre-fabricated but some need to be custom-made.
All fracture bracing require a referral from a doctor or specialist physician, if you have a referral contact Orthokids on the link below:
