Fracture Bracing

Broken bones and soft-tissue injuries occur frequently in growing children. Appropriate bracing and follow-up care help protect the injury while healing takes place.

Support for broken bones and injuries

Children’s bones heal well — but the right support at the right time matters.

When a child or teenager breaks a bone or sustains a significant sprain, bracing may be recommended instead of a cast, or after a cast is removed. We work alongside orthopaedic specialists, emergency departments, GPs and physiotherapists to provide well-fitted fracture braces designed specifically for growing bodies.

A confirmed diagnosis or referral is required before fracture bracing is provided

When is fracture bracing used?

Fracture bracing may be appropriate when a fracture is stable and the bone alignment is satisfactory. It is often recommended as part of conservative (non-surgical) management by your treating specialist, or after a cast has been removed and ongoing protection is still needed. Bracing can also be used to support significant sprains that require structured stabilisation.

Not all fractures are suitable for bracing. The decision is always made in consultation with your treating doctor.

How fracture bracing helps

A well-fitted brace helps stabilise the injured area and protect the bone while it heals. In some cases, it allows swelling to settle and can be removed for hygiene when appropriate. Bracing can also support a gradual and safe return to everyday activities.

The type of brace recommended will depend on the injury, your child’s age, and the stage of healing.

Using a brace instead of a plaster cast can be an excellent treatment for fractures sustained in the rough and tumble of children’s lives.
