Flat feet

Flat feet are common in kids and generally not cause for concern. If your child gets tired quickly, complains of foot or leg pain, or you’re concerned about how they walk, an assessment may help.

When flat feet are worth checking

Flat feet are common in children, and parents often notice tired legs, foot pain, or a walk that looks a little unusual.

In many cases it’s part of normal development—young children can look flatter-footed because the arch is still forming and their ligaments are naturally flexible. Most kids develop a more visible arch as they grow.

If your child is sore, fatigues quickly, seems unsteady, or avoids activity, an assessment can help. Supportive footwear, simple strength and flexibility advice, and—when needed—custom orthoses can improve comfort and confidence.

What happens at an Orthokids assessment?

Our paediatric orthotists focus on understanding your child as a whole — how they move, play, and manage daily activities.

The appointment begins with a conversation about your child’s history, current abilities, and goals. We then assess their movement by observing testing their joints and muscles and how they sit, stand, walk, or play.

If orthotic support is recommended, we explain why, what type of orthosis may help, and what changes to expect. Measurements or a mould may be taken, and we’ll talk through next steps, wear time, and follow-up — always making sure families feel informed and comfortable.

Notice patterns

When does discomfort happen (after sport, long walks, school days)? Does your child avoid activity, trip often, or fatigue quickly?

Check footwear

Choose supportive, well-fitting shoes for daily activities (a firm heel counter and secure fit can help). If you’re unsure, bring your child’s most-worn shoes to the appointment.

Book an assessment

If your child has pain, fatigue, balance issues, or concerns about gait, an assessment can clarify whether this is normal development or if support could help.
